Job Summary
The Barista is responsible for the professional preparation and service of coffee, tea, beverages, and approved light refreshments within the hospital coffee shop. The role ensures consistently high standards of beverage quality, food safety, hygiene, presentation, customer service, and cost control while working under the direct supervision of the Head Chef. The Barista must maintain a professional and welcoming environment suitable for patients, doctors, nurses, hospital staff, visitors, and other customers.
Job Details
A. Coffee & Beverage Preparation
• Prepare and serve espresso-based beverages, brewed coffee, tea, and other approved beverages according to standard recipes.
• Operate coffee machines, grinders, blenders, and other beverage equipment correctly and safely.
• Ensure consistency in taste, temperature, presentation, and portion sizes.
• Prepare beverages according to customer orders and departmental standards.
• Ensure all ingredients and beverages are fresh and properly handled.
B. Food & Light Refreshment Service
• Assist with the preparation and service of approved snacks, sandwiches, pastries, and other light refreshments.
• Ensure food is properly portioned, presented, stored, and served.
• Maintain appropriate food temperatures and safe handling practices.
• Follow recipes, portion guides, and instructions provided by the Head Chef.
C. Customer Service
• Welcome customers professionally and provide courteous, efficient service.
• Take and process customer orders accurately.
• Respond professionally to customer questions and requests.
• Handle customer feedback and complaints appropriately, escalating unresolved issues to the Head Chef.
• Maintain confidentiality and professionalism when serving patients, hospital staff, doctors, and visitors.
D. Hygiene & Food Safety
• Maintain high standards of personal hygiene, food hygiene, and cleanliness at all times.
• Follow hospital food safety and sanitation procedures.
• Keep the coffee preparation area, counters, equipment, utensils, and service areas clean and sanitized.
• Follow proper handwashing and food-handling procedures.
• Ensure ingredients are stored correctly and within their required shelf life.
• Report any food safety, hygiene, or quality concerns immediately to the Head Chef.
E. Equipment Care
• Clean and maintain the coffee machine, grinder, blender, refrigerator, and other equipment according to required procedures.
• Perform daily cleaning and basic checks of coffee equipment.
• Report equipment faults, damage, or maintenance requirements immediately to the Head Chef.
• Use all equipment responsibly to prevent damage and unnecessary breakdowns.
F. Stock Control & Cost Management
• Monitor daily stock levels of coffee, milk, tea, syrups, sugar, cups, and other beverage supplies.
• Inform the Head Chef of low-stock or required items in good time.
• Use ingredients efficiently and minimize wastage.
• Follow FIFO (First In, First Out) principles for stock rotation.
• Maintain proper portion control to support effective costing.
• Account for all products used in beverage and food preparation.
G. Opening & Closing Duties
• Prepare the coffee shop and workstation before the start of service.
• Ensure all required ingredients, equipment, utensils, and service items are available.
• Complete end-of-shift cleaning and closing procedures.
• Secure ingredients and equipment appropriately after service.
• Report outstanding issues or requirements to the Head Chef before leaving duty.
Requirements
• Diploma or certificate in Barista Skills, Food & Beverage, Catering, Hospitality, or a related field is an advantage.
• Previous experience of atleast 2 years as a barista, café attendant, waiter/waitress, or food service employee is preferred.
• Experience working in a hospital, hotel, restaurant, café, or other high-standard food service environment is an advantage.
• Basic knowledge of coffee preparation and beverage service.
• Knowledge of food hygiene and safe food handling practices
